Spy 2015

The title of this residency exhibition in Inside-Out Art Museum is SPY.

My work focuses on the relationship between private space and public space – it is possible for a place to be both public and private. There is an important abstract validity, which brings about this kind of relationship.

I asked myself, “why is the Inside-Out Art Museum Inside-Out?” There is a similar thinking between my work and the name of Inside-Out Art Museum. I decided against using the words “inside-out” (Chinese: zhong jian,, as the Chinese meaning suggests a lack of imagination. Instead, I use “Spy” as in modern Chinese, there is a shared meaning and word of “inside-out”and “spy”(Chinese: jian die 间谍).

Using the Xijiao Military Airport, located near to the Inside-Out Art Museum as the context, I placed myself in the performative role of a spy. The role of the spy is also a relationship between two things – the inside and the outside. This fictional narrative explains the spatial language of my wooden sculpture – both inside and outside of the museum.
